[From the introduction to the book:]
"I have to admit, I was rather surprised to learn my grandmother had traveled on horseback as a "scout" next to a covered wagon during a family move from the United States to Canada, was apparently an expert horseback rider (of necessity, not of hobby), had various experiences with American Indians, and had an ex-slave help her mother with the house in Virginia. (I realize that these days we are to say "Native Americans" or perhaps "indigenous peoles," but, at the time my grandmother lived, Native Americans were still called Indians — even by themselves, as you will see in one of the anecdotes.)"

This biography is personal to me but, I hope, universal to anyone interested in the time period around 1900. After the biography, there is a brief adendum with a photo of Crooked Tree School students and staff taken about 1897 or 1898 including Bessie Misel at around age seven or eight, followed by the newspaper arcile that contained the original of our cover photo. After that is an appendix of names found in the book (and some of their spouses), intended especially for genealogical searches.
